"What do we wear?"
You're considering booking a family portrait session or you already have and now your next question is "What do we wear?" I know for myself, back before I became a photographer, deciding what to wear was the most stressful part. Coordinating clothing for your family members can be a daunting task. Do I wear a dress? Do we need to all match? Do we have top have the exact same colors? Don't worry! It't not near as complicated as it seems. I am a very visual person so I hope that these examples will help you decide what to wear, or not to wear.
Here are 5 things to avoid when choosing your outfits:
Don't be too "matchy". Let each family member show their individual style and personality though their clothing.
By using different shades and other accent colors, you can match without everyone looking just alike.
Avoid wearing bright white because it can wash you out in photos.
Cream or off-white can be great accent pieces but avoid solid white clothing.
Bold prints look best if you choose a print to tie into the other colors.
This is a great example of how you can tie in your own family (first photo) into a bigger family portrait (second photo). Shades of blue with pops of bright red and a few prints thrown in make this family photo cohesive.
Avoid neon colors.
Bold colors such as yellow, red, blue, etc. are a great choice and stand out in photos and may also be great transition piece from season to season.
